Obituary for Bernt "Al" Allan Hansen

Bernt Allan (“Al”) Hansen was born March 29, 1941, in Longview, Washington, to Wilma and Bernt Hansen, of Chinook, where he was raised. Bernt became an Eagle Scout while attending Ilwaco High School, graduating in 1959. He attended Washington State University and transferred to Portland State to graduate with a degree in Business Administration in 1964. He then began his lifelong love of travel by accepting a 6-month job in Denmark working at a coat factory, followed by a solo trip through Europe. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1965, he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Ord in California.
In 1967, during a Spanish class in Monterey, Ca. he met his beautiful wife, Carole. The two were married a year later in Carmel and honeymooned in Yosemite National Park. In the fall of 1968 he was discharged from the Army, and the couple moved to Eugene, Oregon, as Bernt had been accepted to Law School at the University of Oregon, graduating in 1971. Throughout the summer of 1970, Bernt and Carole toured extensively in Europe, visiting over twenty countries together.
In 1972, The Hansens welcomed their first child, Matthew. They moved to McMinnville, Oregon in 1973,where Bernt began working as Deputy District Attorney for Yamhill County. Their second child, Nicolai, was born in 1974. Bernt continued to work for the County until he started his own private practice, specializing in personal injury and workers’ compensation. He served on McMinnville’s Planning Commission and City Council and was active in Rotary. Their last child, Rachel, was born in 1980 and the family maintained strong ties to their McMinnville community of friends and colleagues.
Throughout his life Bernt enjoyed myriad interests, including hunting, fishing, history, stamp and coin collecting, and traveling the world with family or friends. Bernt was Rotary President in 1995 and a YCAP Board Member for the past 10 years. He is remembered for his humor, adventurous spirit and community involvement. His law career flourished until ill health forced retirement around 2012. Bernt “Al” is survived by his loving wife and children, who plan to host a Celebration of Life event in McMinnville in early March. They ask that those interested in attending reach out to the family directly.
Private interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
