Obituary for Claudine Floyd

Claudine Floyd passed away on October 3, 2017 with her family by her side at Cherrywood Memory Care. She was 88 years old. She was born December 5, 1928 in Franklin County, Kansas (near Centropolis) to Scott Orren Nelson and Clara May Beckerdite Nelson on her grandparent’s farm on a bitter cold morning with her mother and other family members all sick with the flu.
The Depression hit the family hard and it was decided to leave the flatlands of Kansas. The family began the journey west in the fall of 1944, their destination, Forest Grove, Oregon, where her father’s sister lived. The sight of the Columbia River along with trees and hills were a welcome view. After their move to Oregon, Claudine did not have all of her cousins to play with and relied on her dogs. She always had a dog throughout her life and loved having farm animals. Her father found a job at US Plywood in Willamina where the family settled. Claudine graduated from Willamina High School in 1947. She attended Willamina Christian Church where she met J.D. “Doug” Floyd. They were married August 29, 1948 at the church.
She was a homemaker her entire life, except for a few months of work in the canneries in Salem. She served on the Polk County Elections for many years. Her passion was growing and tending a garden. When visiting, you were always sent home with produce or something she had canned. She was a very active member of Willamina Christian Church and Fort Hill Grange and Buell Grange. She enjoyed visits to the beach, especially showing it off to family relatives from Kansas, Missouri, and North Carolina. She was involved with her children’s activities in Girl Scouts, 4H, and attending sports events. She was a basketball fan and listened to Trail Blazer games on the radio.
There has been five generations of girls/women in the family for the past three years.
Claudine was pre-deceased by her husband, parents, sister (Carolyn “Gene” Vann) and infant brother. She is survived by her children; Janice (Keith) Branson of Dayton; Ed Floyd of Willamina; Vernon Floyd of Yamhill; Alan (Sara) Floyd of Willamina; grandchildren; Melissa (Ray) Cisneros of Dayton; Joe Padilla of Bend; Samantha Floyd of Kennebunkport, Maine and Kaleb and Mikalie Floyd of Willamina. Three great grandchildren and two great great great grandchildren; cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 11am, at Willamina Christian Church. Interment will be at the Willamina Cemetery. The family expresses thanks to the staff of Cherrywood Memory Care and Kindred Hospice for their wonderful care the last couple of years. Memorial donations may be made to Willamina Christian Church.
