Obituary for Doris Ione Aschim

Doris was born January 2, 1920 to Ernest Maxson and Ethelyn Elijah in Lewistown Montana. She was the first baby girl born in Fergus County that year. As a small child they moved to Mount Vernon, Washington. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1938 with Honors. After graduation the family moved to Amity, Oregon. Doris continued her education at Pacific College (George Fox University). Due to finances she did not complete her degree. This led to her always encouraging her children and grandchildren to pursue course work after high school graduation. She started a career as a sales lady in McMinnville, working first for JC Penney Co. and then for Montgomery Ward Co. as a Department Head, and continued helping on the family farm.
On January 9, 1945 she married Newton Aschim, who was home on an Army furlough after being stationed in Iceland for three and half years. Doris moved with Newt to his new assignment in North Carolina and on to Fort Benning, Georgia. After nine months Newt’s division was sent to Hawaii and Doris returned to her family farm until Newt was discharged four months later. They settled briefly in Amity. In 1948 they moved to Newberg where she helped Newt supervise a farm for C.M. Bishop, owner of Pendleton Woolen Mills. After six years in Newberg they returned to Amity. Doris enjoyed several years of “Family Life”; community activities, Sunday school teacher, Cub Scouts Den Mother, P.T.A. offices, Amity Fireman Auxiliary, 4H-Leader. Later came the basketball games and FFA involvement. She joined the Amity Methodist Church in April 1960.
When her sons were both in elementary school she returned to work part-time as a sales clerk for Timmreck & McNicol Jewelers in McMinnville. She then started a full time job in Amity at the Amity Drug Store which she held until the store closed 18 years later. Upon retirement she spent her time enjoying her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, her flowers, yard, sewing and the many church activities.
Doris lived independently in her home in Amity until December when health issues required her to seek assistance.
She is proceeded in death by her husband Newton Aschim and her brother Vernon Maxson. She is survived by her Sister-In-Law, Marie Maxson; sons Rolland (Cecelia), Allen (Diane), along with 5 grandchildren Laurie, Misty, Teresa, Casey and Amanda 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces an nephews.
Private family graveside services will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens. Please join the family in a memorial service at the Amity Methodist Church, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Amity United Methodist Women.
