Obituary for Dorothy Jean Rasmussen Williams

Dorothy Williams left this life courageously and peacefully on November 13, 2017, in the ICU of WVMC with many dear family and friends at her bedside. Dorothy was born on April 2, 1929, in Ringsted, Iowa. Her father, Rasmus Rasmussen, born in Denmark, came to the USA as a toddler. Her mother, Eleonora, was born in Ringsted. Dorothy moved to McMinnville with her family in 1936. She learned resourcefulness from an early age. She would pack her bike tires with sawdust to keep them rolling and twist wire to fashion a basketball hoop--it was worth it to play basketball! She loved sports as long as health permitted, especially basketball, golfing and bowling. Her dad died of a heart attack when she was only 16. She started working at the neighborhood grocery store while still in high school to help her family financially. Before graduation from McMinnville High School at the age of 17, she began working at Auto Electric where she worked 1946-1957 as a bookkeeper, secretary, and counter/parts“man.”

In 1948 an earthquake in McMinnville drove people out of the stores and introduced her to Gerald Williams who was driving by Auto Electric on his motorcycle. Dorothy and Gerald were married on October 7, 1950. They have a son, David (Margie) Williams, and a daughter, Debra (John) Hermens. Dorothy loved being with people, especially her sisters and their families, neighbors, and church friends. She loved the great outdoors, especially the beach, rivers, and mountain lakes. Highlights of summer were camping with her sister Darlene (and Bill) Wood, now deceased, and trips to California to be with her sister Shirley (and Neil) Smersfelt and family, and visiting her other sisters, Wanda (Leo) Godsey, and, now deceased: Maxine “Mickey” Waldrip and Ardys (and Darrell) Moen.

She enjoyed working for Dr. Carl Menkel from 1960-65, and helping at her son’s Shell Service Station on 7th & Adams 1973-80. She joined the SDA Church, and volunteered at the Adventist Community Service Center in McMinnville for 25 years until 2007, most of that time as its Director, where she lived her most passionate niche in life: helping people in need while being resourceful with what the Lord provides and bonding with a team of volunteers. In 2002 the Yamhill County Hearts and Hands awarded her Volunteer of the Month, saying “…Dorothy is truly a devoted woman to her community, church, and those less fortunate who are in need, and she is a well-deserving recipient of this award. Yamhill County is blessed because of the gift of heart and hands that Dorothy gives….!”

Before she married Gerry, they began building a house with their own hands and worked on it during much of the 48 years of their marriage until Gerry passed away in 1998. With her determination, a lot of work by two of her grandsons, and the grace of God, she fulfilled her desire to live independently in that house until the day she passed from this life at the age of 88. Her 6 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, and 9 great-grandchildren, have been her greatest joy of all! Dorothy was a delightful grandma, devoted to all of them and their families. This matriarch treasured frequent get togethers with her growing family. She loved people and she brought love and cheerfulness to this life.
