Obituary for Frederick Thomas (Tom) "Grumpy" Carl

Frederick Thomas (Tom) Carl “Grumpy” passed away June 14, 2017, surrounded by his wife and three daughters after a hard-fought battle with cancer. June 14th was both Flag Day and his father’s birthday and was always one of his favorite days – a significant day to join beloved family and friends. He was the son of Frederick William and Aletha Elizabeth (Richardson) Carl born in Dadeville, Missouri on May 11, 1948. While he spent his youth in Fargo, ND and Morehead, MN, he lived his teenage years in McMinnville and moved to Lafayette, Oregon with his wife and two young daughters in 1971. It is in Lafayette where he spent the majority of his life and passed into the next.
Fred graduated from McMinnville High School in 1967 and entered active duty in the Navy soon afterward. He served aboard both the H.M.S. Ajax and the U.S.S. Constellation, spending his time on Midway Island during the Vietnam Era - followed by time in the Naval Reserves. After his time in the Navy, Fred worked a few years in the Portland shipyards, Rex Mobile Homes, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Trappist Abbey, but found his home at Cascade Steel Mill. At the age of 40, he returned to college, graduated with his Associates Degree, and completed his apprenticeship becoming a Millwright. He retired (the first time) after 25 years in 2008 and finished his working career at RB Rubber in Portland in 2011.
Fred had an unwavering work ethic. One of his most rewarding experiences was representing the Local 8378 United Steelworkers Union by serving as treasurer for six years and president for an additional six years. He was fair, honest, loyal, unassuming, modest and whether you knew him as Fred, Tom or Grumpy he was a friend to all those who knew him. He worked diligently to make his parents proud and to be a good example to not only his brothers and sisters, but to his entire family including his children.
Fred loved the outdoors and all that the Pacific Northwest had to offer the avid sportsman. There is not a memory of Fred that does not include a winding road, off-road fishing hole, hunting trip, or a dory launch into the Pacific Ocean. He shared his love of the outdoors with the people he loved.
Fred loved the outdoors and met the love of his life at one of his favorite places - on a double date at Pacific City with his cousin Mike. On January 22, 1971, Kathryn and Fred were married upon completion of his time in the Navy. Over the next 46 years they were blessed with four children, Kari, Kim, Bill, and Amy; seventeen grandchildren, Brandon, A.J., Jake, Mykeal, Zak, Kaitilyn, Jonathan, Tori, Kristi, Emily, Mary, Colin, Ciara, Ethan, Rylie, Arienne, Joseph; and one great-grandchild, Ellie.
Fred enjoyed attending sporting and other personal events with his grandchildren, children and especially his son-in-law, Benjie, and attending out of town events with his daughter, Amy.
We would like to thank Fred’s close friends who visited often and provided love and support that eased his suffering. His family who worked so diligently to provide and care for his needs and well-being; and his brothers and sisters who cared for his wife, home and other needs when he could not – we are wholeheartedly grateful.
Fred is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughters – Kari Thompson, Kim Hamling (Ray), and Amy Hardesty (Benjie Hedgecock); daughter-in-law, Gena Carl; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; 3 brothers, Bill Carl (Cheryl), Jim Carl (Debbie), and Dan; 4 sisters, Linda Freeman (Clay), Carol Giddings (Larry), Ruth Moad (Brian), and Edie Walund (Shawn); Great Aunt, Ruth Niska; Aunt Gloria Carl; brother-in-law, Jim Stuart (Kathy Williams); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, William (Bill) Carl in 2011; granddaughter, Mary Carl in 2003; brother, Pat Carl in 2013 (and sister-in-law Suzette 2011); nephew, Tech Freeman (2009); parents, Fred (2014) and Aletha (2013) Carl; parents-in-law, Robert Stuart (2000) and Nels (2008) and Freda (2004) Kuust.
Any monetary donations can be made on behalf of Fred and his family to the American Cancer Society (cancer.org), Pacific City Dorymen’s Association (pcdorymen.com) or St. James Catholic Church of McMinnville, OR (stjamesmac.com).
Service will be held Friday, June 23rd, 11:00am at St. James Catholic Church, with a rosary at 10:30am. Viewing will be held Thursday, June 22nd, from 4-7pm at Macy & Son. To leave condolences, visit www.macyandson.com.
