Obituary for James Benton "JB" Wood

James Benton “JB” Wood passed away on November 15, 2017 just 18 days shy of his 89th birthday.
JB was born in West Plains, Missouri, the second of four children, to Irvin and Fern Wood and raised on the family farm. That hard work ethic, deep devotion to family and no-nonsense attitude stayed with him throughout his life.
He had a lifelong love of baseball, playing semi-pro ball in Missouri and a great appreciation for cookies and other sweets.
In 1944, at a dance, he met the love of his life the beautiful and feisty Dennis Mae. He won her over with his mischievous smile and her many young suitor’s hearts were broken when she agreed to become his wife.
They made the move from Missouri to Oregon in the early fifties to join family members finding work in the lumber industry. JB worked at Oregon Alder Maple until it closed and then White City Plywood until his retirement.
He also spent a few years as Santa Claus at the Old JC Penney’s in downtown McMinnville during the early 70’s.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dennis Mae. They totally devoted to one another their entire 62 years of marriage until she passed in 2006. He never stopped grieving.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Dorval Wood and sister Louella Rieskamp.
He is survived by his children, daughters Debby Lewis and Teresa Smith of McMinnville and son Kenneth of Dundee.
JB passed into God’s hands quickly and at home.
He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be deeply missed.
