Obituary for Jerry Duane Bakke

Jerry Duane Bakke, 86, of McMinnville, Oregon passed away March 22, 2018 due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was surrounded by his family. Jerry was born in Minneapolis, MN, June 6, 1931 to Arthur O. Bakke and Mary Esther Makee. The first ten years of his life were spent in Williston, North Dakota where he learned to ski and play hockey. The family moved to Portland, OR where Jerry continued his love of skiing, participating in downhill racing on the ski slopes of the Cascades. He graduated from Jefferson high school and attended Northwest Broadcast school, while working at radio and electronic jobs. He was inducted into the Army in 1952 in the Korean War. His army career began with 6 months of radio repair school, subsequently moving into an 18-month course in guided missile systems. Midway through the course he was moved into the instruction staff and was promoted to chief instructor.
Jerry attended University of Oregon upon discharge from the army and eventually obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Portland State University. He joined Skyways as co-boss of the radio service department. In 1960 he married Karen Soderberg Harrison and had three children. As the demands of family increased he sold his interest in the airplane radio service and became a teacher at Portland Community College where he taught Electronics, retiring in 1989. In 1972 he married Sharon “Sherrie” Essex. In 1974 the couple began the building of their 36’ Cascade sailboat, “Black Magic”, launching her in 1976. This was the beginning of a 30-year sailing adventure, cruising and racing on the Columbia River, and accumulating thousands of miles in the waters of the Northwest and Canada, Mexico twice, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii). Jerry and Sherrie have been members of Rose City Yacht Club in Portland since 1975 and the Birch Bay Yacht Club of Birch Bay, Washington where they lived for 16 years before moving to McMinnville. They both obtained U. S. Coast Guard licenses as U. S. Merchant Marine Officers for vessels under 25 tons. After retiring from the sailing life, the couple continued their adventures aboard their motor home and travelled around the United States, Canada and Alaska. When not travelling Jerry became an avid woodworker.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon “Sherrie” of McMinnville, OR, sons Kyle Bakke (Trevor), Germany, Lyle Essex Bakke, Portland, Robin Harrison Bakke, San Diego; Daughters Dana Bakke Boswell (Michael), Portland; Melissa Bakke Moran (Brian), Portland; granddaughters: Maggie, McKenzie and Elizabeth Moran, Portland, Brittney Bakke Molocznik (Bo), Nicole Bakke and grandson, Luke Bakke and 3 great grandchildren, San Diego, CA; sister, Karen Harris, Burns, OR; nephews, David Bakke (Cindy), Gresham, and Steve Bakke, (Lisa) Portland, 4 nieces and nephews.
