Obituary for Joan F. Friese

Joan F. Friese, 79, of McMinnville, died May 23, 2018, at Willamette Valley Medical Center following complications from surgery.
At a very early age, Joan loved to dance. She took dance lessons learning to tap dance as well as learning to twirl the baton. She carried these skills into High School where she became a majorette for the band and a cheerleader. One of her highlights was marching in the Rose Parade in Portland. Her senior year, Joan was one of the homecoming princess. She loved her classmates and has continued to work on the committee to organize class reunions.
Following graduation from Forest Grove High School she married Gary Humburg and the couple lived in Hillsboro. For most of her life, she was a homemaker. She did enjoy working part time as a dental assistant, a teacher’s aide, and as a clerk at the Fashion Bar dress shop in Hillsboro. But most of all, she enjoyed caring for her family.
Later, she married Bob Friese. Bob was manager to the JC Penny’s store in Hillsboro and transferred to Albany, Oregon, where the couple lived for several years.
Following Bob’s retirement, they moved to McMinnville. They enjoyed traveling, playing golf and taking their grandchildren to the beach. They were enthusiastic supporters of the Linfield Football team.
Following Bob’s death, Joan has continued to be very active in the McMinnville Community. She has been very active in the McMinnville Garden Club; the same club that her grandmother was a member of years ago. She loved to walk and exercise, and was a member of the Senior’s Exercise Group. Joan had continued in her love for dancing and almost every Friday night attended the dance at the Grange Hall. She was an active member of the McMinnville Covenant Church and loved her church family very much. She was a member of the Lady Bugs, a group of local women who met together to support and encourage on another.
Joan had a love for sports. She attended almost every Linfield Football game. She was an avid Portland Trailblazers fan. Her favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys. But most of all, she will be remembered by her encouraging and gracious spirit and her unconditional love for her family and friends.
Joan was preceded in death by parents Elmer and Bernice Spooner, her first husband Gary Humburg, her second husband Bob Friese, daughter Kim Humburg, and granddaughter Chelsea Fresh. She is survived by brother Dwain (Darlene) Spooner of LaGrande, OR, daughter Lori Humburg of Cornelius, OR and son-in-law Tom Fresh of Portland, OR, step-daughter Terri (Doug) of Dansville, VA, step-daughter Patti Felix of Canoga Park, CA, two step-grandchildren and five grandchildren (whom she treasured) and many great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at Macy & Son Funeral Home at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 30th.
