Obituary for John Cornelius Van Calcar

John C Van Calcar left this world Thursday, April 27, 2017 surrounded by his beloved family.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 4th, 2:00 p.m. at Macy’s Funeral Home in McMinnville,
Oregon.

John was born in Goshen, New York to Hendrick and Alida de Haan Van Calcar on May 17, 1931. At an early age his family moved to Modesto, California and then to Coos Bay, Oregon. He grew up and worked on the family dairy and, with his father, developed a prize-winning herd of registered Jersey cattle. His love for the dairy and his cows became a life-long passion.

On May 6, 1960 John married Verna Mae Hudson and in 1965 they established their home in McMinnville.
John worked for the USDA Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service as director of Yamhill County’s farm programs until he moved to the Oregon office in Portland and traveled the state. Photography was his hobby and as a freelance photographer, he photographed many weddings, dance programs and agriculture events.

Besides photography, John enjoyed gardening, traveling and writing. He was active in 4-H as both a member and club leader, the Jersey Cattle Club, the Grange and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, four children: Sandra, Daniel, Pamela and Nicholas, two grandchildren: Cordelia and Rano and siblings: Henry Van Calcar of Edmonds WA, Richard Van Calcar of Port Angeles, WA and Nellie Oehler of Corvallis, OR.
