Obituary for John Roman Rock Sr.

John Roman Rock Sr. passed away on June 18, 2018 in McMinnville, Oregon, with his family at his side. John was a quiet man and steady all through his life, yet an enduring man as a foundation for his family and a pillar in the community, but also a wonderful giant by any standard through example. Never asking, never wanting, and never needing, but always ready to put in the hard work and give what was needed. A true stature of a man for recognizing life’s obligations while picking up the mantle to wear it no matter how difficult the situation. A pillar of strength with his Catholic faith as a foundation, an example for all to follow. A true AMERICAN embedded with morals and values too for all to follow. A quiet leader to observe.

He was 83 years old, born on July 18, 1938 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. After his mother passed away his father was no longer able to care for their children, and John was taken into the care of adoptive parents who raised him to adulthood. They reinforced his Catholic faith which remained strong throughout his life and instilled in him the knowledge and skill to succeed in business throughout adulthood.

In 1952 the family moved to McMinnville, Oregon where shared in the founding of Sonnleitner & Smith Cookie Company, which later operated as the well-recognized Archway Cookies. It was here he also met the love of his life, and future wife Mary Avon Spraggins, while attending a singles dance in Salem, Oregon, where they had their first dance to “Melody of Love.” They married April 16, 1955, settled in McMinnville and raised their family which included Brenda Jean, John Jr., Michael, Jeffrey, Timothy and Jeanne. John was lifelong member and officer of the Elks in McMinnville and together with his family dedicated and active members of St. James Catholic Parish.

John worked at Archway for 22 years but struck out on his own when John’s parents moved to Texas. John and Avon began Oven King Cookies as a franchise distributing to the greater Northwest. Soon after, they opened their own business, Avontti, distributing fresh pizzas to grocery stores in Oregon, Washington and California. In their later years they opened Roman’s Pizza in Dayton, Oregon, which later included a convenience store and tavern, which was re-christened Ferry St. Landing.

John and Avon continued to maintain strong ties to the McMinnville Elks and to St. James Catholic Church throughout their lives.

John was preceded in death by his daughter Brenda Jean and sons John Jr., Michael and Jeffrey. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary Avon Rock, their son Tim and daughter Jeanne, their grandson Sean, granddaughter Brandi, and great-grandson Julian, great-granddaughter Brielle, grandson Jayson and great-granddaughter Aliyah.

Please join our family to remember John with services to be held at St. James’ on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at St. James Cemetery with reception at St. James. All are welcome to join us at Roman’s Ferry St. Landing after the reception.
