Obituary for Margaret Louise Symons Lee

Beloved by all, Margaret Louise Symons Lee passed away in McMinnville, Oregon on Tuesday, April 24 in her apartment at Hillside Retirement Community. She will be greatly missed. Her smile and personality could light up a room, and the stories she told of her life and travels entertained friends and family.

Margie was born on June 4, 1927, in Seattle, Washington, the oldest of four children, to Arthur E. and Louise (Crary) Symons. She spent her early life through high school in Laurelhurst and then attended Oberlin College for one year, transferring to the University of Washington for the remainder of her university education. Margie was in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and met the future love of her life at U of W, Thomas Rowe Lee, a veteran of World War II who was also attending the University. Margie and Tom were happily married on September 29, 1948 in Seattle, and this union lasted until the passing of Tom on November 22, 2012: 65 years united! Together they had three daughters. A tragic turning point in their lives was in 1959 when their youngest daughter, Terry Ellen, died of cancer at age two and a half. Tom’s job at Shell Oil Company took them to California, Washington and finally to Oregon where they retired and lived for the past 35 years.

Margie loved the Pacific Northwest, and especially enjoyed camping in tents when her family was young and later in travel trailers. Tom and Margie journeyed multiple times to all fifty states, Mexico and every province in Canada. These trips and later their international travel, were passions of Margie’s. Often these sojourns would last up to three months. Margie loved to recount that she and Tom had traveled to over 75 countries and had been on over 40 ocean cruises. She would often say when someone came to visit, “Let me tell you about our little adventures,” and she would launch into a story about something that happened on one of her and Tom’s trips.

Margie was a warm, positive and compassionate person, and she loved more than anything being a mother and wife. Her generosity of spirit and hospitable manner assisted her in a job as a Welcome Wagon hostess in the communities where she resided: first in San Ramon, California and later in Beaverton, Oregon. When Tom retired, Margie and Tom moved to Corvallis where Margie spent 10 years volunteering at the OSU Thrift Shop Folk Club until the couple moved to Hillside Retirement Community in McMinnville. Margie loved people and particularly enjoyed the numerous opportunities at Hillside to get together with new and old friends. Bridge, book clubs, exercise classes and numerous other groups provided Margie with great joy.

One of her fondest pleasures was taking photos of her traveling and keeping albums and diaries of all her adventures. These 70+ memory albums gave Margie great comfort throughout her life, as she had at her fingertips pictures of every person she cared about and every place she traveled. She delighted in sharing these photos and the companion colorful stories with her family.

Margie is survived by her two daughters: Kathy (Dan) Williams of Los Gatos, CA and Jennifer (Royal) Jackson of Santa Fe, NM; grandchildren Amberlee, Darius and Colter Jackson; brothers James (Patty) Symons, Arthur (Glenna) Symons and Thomas (Margaret) Symons and many other loving friends and family.

There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony at Hillside Retirement Community; day and time pending. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to The Nature Conservancy or the World Wildlife Fund
