Obituary for Marilyn van Dyk

Long-time McMinnville resident Marilyn van Dyk died May 19, 2018.

Marilyn was born in Portland, Oregon, where she lived the first 18 years of her life. She attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, where she received a B.A. degree in history in 1958. While pursuing graduate studies in history and music at the University of Iowa, Marilyn met her future husband, Marion van Dyk. They married in June 1959 and moved to Ely, Minnesota the following year, where Marion taught music and they enjoyed hiking and canoeing in the northern boundary waters.

Marilyn returned to McMinnville in 1961 when Marion was invited to teach voice and direct the choir at her alma mater, Linfield College. She worked as a Western Civilization course instructor at Linfield and as a paralegal assistant for the Yamhill County District Attorney.

Her volunteer involvements included the Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project, SMART reading program, and First Baptist Church (McMinnville), of which she was a member for 56 years. She was an avid walker, hiker, and birder and participated in a variety of choral and instrumental music activities during most of her life.

She was predeceased by her parents, Verner and Pauline Simonsen, and sister, LaVerne Broad. Survivors include her son, Paul van Dyk, daughter-in-law Diana (Ice) van Dyk, and their daughters, Katie and Kira, of Roseburg; and her daughter, Kirsten van Dyk, and daughter-in-law, Yvette (Divers) van Dyk, of Portland.

At her request, no public service will be held. Arrangements have been made by Macy & Sons. Remembrances can be made to the Marion van Dyk Endowed Music Scholarship at Linfield College or the Yamhill County Food Bank.
