Obituary for Martha Ellen Stevens

Martha Ellen Stevens, formerly a resident of McMinnville, Oregon, passed away on June 26, 2017 at her home in Vancouver, WA. She was 94 years old. Guided by her strong Christian faith, she had looked forward to being reunited with loved ones in heaven for many years.
Born April 29, 1923, she was the eleventh of twelve children produced by the marriage of Thomas and Ella Morris in Cleo Springs, Oklahoma. Her father had acquired the land where he built their home during the 1893 Cherokee Strip Land Run. It was at the family homestead in that Martha and her siblings enjoyed their childhood. She was the last surviving of the children.
As an adult, Martha moved to California, attended Stanford University where she studied drafting, married and started her family of three children. Widowed at a, young age, she remarried a wonderful man, Al Stevens. Together, the two of them reared her children, and moved to McMinnville in the process. Eventually, Martha began working for the State of Oregon, at the forestry division, where she became a cartographer who drew maps of timber sale land freehand with a swivel pen. After many years of this work, she retired, and soon after, moved to Vancouver, Washington.
Perhaps being from so large a family taught Martha her values, of generosity and caring for her extended family members. She remained close to many of her siblings during their lifetimes, as well as her many nieces and nephews throughout her life. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the highlight of her life. She has two granddaughters, one grandson, and six great grandchildren.
Martha is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Doug and Kathleen Salthouse of Bradenton, Florida, and her daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Wayne Kankelberg of Vancouver, Washington. Her youngest son, David Salthouse, has predeceased her, and is buried with her husband.
Family and her friends will gather at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in McMinnville, Oregon on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 3:30 pm for a celebration of her life and sharing of memories. She will be remembered well by many who knew her.
