Obituary for Merle A. Wright

Merle A. Wright was born December 11, 1944 in McMinnville, Oregon. He grew up in Willlamina and Grand Ronde, and graduated from Willamina High School. He served in the Navy for four years during the Viet Nam era including a tour on the USS Enterprise. Following his time in the Navy, Merle earned an associate degree in electrical engineering from Oregon Technical Institute. He went on to become a very successful self-employed logger and self-loader operator for almost 50 years. Eighteen months ago Merle took on a “business associate”, his dog Boomer, the smartest dog in the world and his constant companion.

Merle enjoyed life to the fullest. He and his wife Loreli love to travel and took several cruises including trips to South America, the Caribbean, and Merle’s favorite, the Galapagos Islands. Last summer he and Loreli took a deep sea fishing trip in Mexico with friends where Merle enjoyed the challenge of catching a marlin. He guided friends and family on elk and deer hunts and could hike circles around younger men during the hunts.

Family was the highest priority in Merle’s life. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren for rides on his backhoe, taking them fishing in the creek, and just spending time with them. He is survived by his wife, Loreli in Sheridan; sons Steven Wright and his wife Michelle in Sheridan, Chris Loper and his wife Rhonda in Grants Pass, Josh Hanneman and his wife Robyn in Brookings; and daughter Maggie Harrell and her husband James in Tillamook. He is also survived by a brother Noah Wright and his wife Diane; nephew Doug Wright; and niece Joannie Wright. Merle was blessed with eleven grandchildren: Marcus and Katelin Loper; Amanda, Douglas, and Logan Wright; Christian and Austin Harrell; Ellie, Zoey, Sophi, and Aylee Hanneman. He had one great-grandchild, Josie Loper.

Merle’s life can be explained in two words: well done.

Services will be held at 3:00, on Sunday, July 9th, at the Chapel of Macy and Son. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 10th, at 10:00am, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
