Obituary for Myron Theodore Johnston

Myron Theodore Johnston, 86, passed away September 21, 2017 in McMinnville, Oregon. He had been in failing health and nonambulatory since a stroke in April, 2014.
Myron was born October 10, 1930 to Neil and Esther (Shughart) Johnston in Clarinda, Iowa. He graduated from Clarinda High School and Iowa State University. He married Shirley Ann Perry, August 1952. He then served in the Army, stateside, as a meat inspector due to his Agriculture degree. Three children were born to the union of Myron and Shirley, Denise, Daphne and Darin.
Following the service, he taught Agriculture at Clarinda High School leaving to farm and raise cattle full time. After a farm related back injury, he joined A.O. Smith Harvestore and sold Harvestores and feedlot systems. Myron and his family lived in Adel, Iowa; Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Hastings, Nebraska while with this company. In 1974 he joined New York Life Insurance Company in sales. This career started in Hastings and took him to Grand Junction, Colorado and finally, Lincoln City, Oregon retiring after 30 plus years. Myron was involved in the Presbyterian Church where ever he lived. He always sang in the Choir, sometimes as director. He was known for his renditions of How Great Thou Art and Sweet Little Jesus Boy. He was always ready to serve the church in any way that he could. Through the years, he enjoyed fishing, golf and piloting small airplanes.
In 1980, Myron married Sandra Burke. She had four children, Jeffrey, Catharine, Thomas and Andrew Burke and later 6 grandchildren.
Myron was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sandra in 2011 , and her daughter, Catharine; son in law, Bob Rauterkus and son in law, Kyle Anderson. He is survived by his children, Denise Rauterkus, Daphne Anderson and Darin Johnston. Granddaughter Sara Rauterkus, grandson, Matthew Rauterkus and great granddaughter, Krystal Rauterkus. Sandra’s sons Jeffrey, Thomas and Andrew and her six grandchildren.
Cremation was chosen. Family services will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa at a later date. Memorials may be designated to the donor’s choice and mailed to Denise Rauterkus, 1401 William Ave., North Platte, NE 69101.
