Obituary for Phyllis Ann "Peggy" Vandehey

Phyllis Ann (Peggy) Vandehey, age 91, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018, in McMinnville, OR. She was born on November 9, 1926 in Klamath Falls, Oregon to Roy and Phyllis Patrick.
Peggy and her younger sister Mary were raised primarily in Napa, California, where their father was the president of the local community college. After graduating High School, Peggy attended the University of Oregon. Her roommate, Claire, was engaged to an Oregon State student named Lou Oester and the two of them arranged a blind date for Peggy with Lou’s buddy, Norbert “Van” Vandehey. Peggy was smitten with this funny guy she thought didn’t have a serious bone in his body! Many, many drives between Corvallis and Eugene ensued. The two couples remained lifelong friends.

Peggy and Van were married at St. James Catholic Church on December 29, 1947. They were blessed with five children, and Peggy was a very busy homemaker for the first years of their marriage. When the kids reached school age Peggy enrolled at Oregon State to get her teaching degree. She taught 2nd grade for many years at Grand Prairie Elementary School in Albany Oregon, and then many more years at St Mary’s School in Eugene, Oregon.

Van and Peggy were happily married for 68 years and raised 5 children together. When Peggy wrote her memoirs, she titled it “Me Too- A tale of the tail of a kite” referring to her habit of following Van quietly as he joked and “worked the room” at any and every event or function they were involved in over the years. Van was a friendly, gregarious people-person and Peggy happily played straight-man for him and his many stories. She liked to say that he was the guy that ruled the roost, but she was the gal that ruled the rooster.

Peggy was an artistic person and loved to sketch and paint. Many of their family and friends will recall the beautiful home crafted cards she sent every Christmas for years. Peggy was a prolific seamstress, making many of her family’s clothes over the years. When the grandchildren came along she continued to lovingly create Halloween Costumes, Prom dresses, and many many baby clothes. Peggy loved to read, loved music (especially marching bands, or any band her son Pat was directing!), loved old movies, and above all, loved her family. She lived the last year and a half of her life without Van, and her family’s greatest comfort upon losing her is that “Grammy and PopPop are together again, where they belong!”
Peggy is survived by her son Ted (Annie) Vandehey of Portland; Daughter Beth Hammericksen of Medford; son Pat (Kris) Vandehey of Beaverton; daughter Susan (Bob) Edwards of McMinnville; son Bob (Sally) Vandehey of Portland; her grandchildren Deni (Tim), Jamie (Kirsten), Rani (Dustin), Melanie (Travis), Melissa (Andrew), Cory (Erica), Keri (Jordan), Aaron, Scott (Annie), Sean, Ryan (Nora), Sarah (Tim), Jackie (Brant), Kate (Michael), Dan, Bryce (Kellie), Becky (Noe), Derek, Mariel (Chase), Zach, and Lyla; and her great-grandchildren Zoe, John, Leilani, Gemma, Amelie, Baylee, Riley, Taven, Koda, Brynlee, Carter, McKayla, Casen, Olliver, Ellie, Ben, Joy, Maddie, Geoffrey, Claire, Liam, Alice, Sawyer, Diego, and Nadia.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Norbert (Van), her parents Roy and Phyllis Patrick, brother Ronnie, and sister Mary.
A memorial will be held at 1pm at Macy & Sons Funeral Directors, 135 NE Evans, McMinnville, Oregon on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018.
