Obituary for Richard William Ulrich

Richard was born in Linden, New Jersey to Rudolph and Clara (Fischer) Ulrich. The family lived near a major baseball team stadium, where Richard learned his life-long love for the game. Richard and his brother, Bert, were proud of being boy scouts/leaders together.

Richard served in the US Army from 1942-1946, serving four European campaigns - one in Normandy. He developed his passion for travel during this time.

While on a blind date in LA, California, he met Dorothy Blenkinsop and the two carried on a courtship by correspondence until the end of the war. They married in McMinnville, Oregon (Dorothy‘s home town) and were married 65 years. They settled their family of 5 children in Ventura, California (where he was glad to not shovel snow!).
The family attended the First United Methodist church for many years.

Richard graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana and earned his Master’s Degree from University of Oregon. After moving to Ventura, he taught history and political science in the Ventura Unified School District and at Ventura College. Most summers were spent traveling the US with his family in a station wagon pulling a tear drop trailer! Richard won a teaching exchange Fulbright Scholarship to Bicester, England and was a Rhodes Scholar attending University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

After retirement in 1983, he and Dorothy extensively traveled the world, living in Wales for 2 years. The couple moved to McMinnville, Oregon settling at Hillside Retirement Community where they were socially active starting Saturday afternoon movie time and playing card/board games.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother. He is survived by daughters Shirley Newingham of Lewisville, TX; Evelyn Stevens of Newberg, OR; Marianne Angel of Santa Maria, CA; and sons Tom of Carson, CA; and Bill of Ventura, CA; along with 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Burial will be at South Yamhill Cemetery, McMinnville, OR at 11:30a.m. on July 5, 2017. Celebration of life will be at Hillside Retirement Community, the Manor Activity Room, at 1:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation of Oregon or the Macular Degeneration Research organization.
