Sarah Ann, known to many in the area for her artistic decorated wedding cakes and Christmas cookies, died January 8, 2018 at the age of 92. Sarah was born in Michigan November 29, 1925 to Ward and Annie Williamson. Her father died when she was 9 and her mother, determined to keep Sarah and her 4 sibling together, moved her family to a farm outside Clear Lake, WI.
In 1948 Sarah married Kenneth Britain and their first child, Lucinda Ann, was born in 1949. The young family moved to Stillwater, MN where Sarah worked part-time as a server at the Lowell Inn. In 1952 she took adult education classes in cake-decorating and was immediately certified to teach the course based on the excellence of her work. In 1953 son Gerald Leroy was born. Sarah continued to decorate cakes, teach classes in cake-decorating, and enter cakes in the Minnesota State Fair where she garnered many blue ribbons By the late 50’s, she was catering weddings. Husband Ken died in 1962. After son James Ward was born, Sarah and her children moved to McMinnville where she decorated cakes at Sweeney’s Bakery. The bakery closed 2 years later and Sarah began a 20-year career at JC Penney, spending most of her time in the baby department on the mezzanine. After a brief second marriage in 1967 that ended in divorce, Sarah married Andy Hodney in 1973. Her wedding cakes grew more elaborate and often included a water fountain, figures of the wedding party and bridges leading to side cakes. Over the years, out of cake and frosting she made baskets of flowers, a piano, a set of false teeth, pink elephants, and the entire U of O band. Her molded and decorated Christmas cookies were shared with family and friends, neighbors, the mailman and the garbage truck drivers. For several years she sold a booklet containing recipes and instructions for her cookies at the state fair. Husband Andy died in 1985 and in 1987 Sarah married Wasyl Adkins, a marriage that lasted until his death in 2006.
