Robert Neal Abrahamson was born June 20, 1921 at Bennett, Wisconsin to Neal F. and Lillian A. Malloy Abrahamson. At an early age, Robert moved with his family to Garibaldi, Oregon and lived there until 1942.
In 1942, following the Pearl Harbor bombings, Bob enlisted in the Navy Sabees serving for 3-1/2 years, with 3 years of overseas duty in South Pacific that included the Guam and Ellice-Gilbert campaigns. Previous to WWII, he worked as a boom-man on the water at Garibaldi making sea-going log rafts. He also worked on a pile driver on Tillamook Bay.
Bob and Phyllis Donovan were married at St. Mary's By The Sea at Rockaway on August 18, 1946. They lived in Tillamook before moving to Monmouth, Oregon. At Monmouth, Bob attended Oregon College of Education (now presently Western Oregon University) for one year before transferring to Linfield College. In 1950 he earned his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in 1952. He was a talented basketball and track athlete while at Linfield, and held the Linfield and NW Conference High Jump Record for several years.
Bob accepted a teaching and Varsity Basketball and Track coaching position at Myrtle Creek High School upon graduating from Linfield. A coaching highlight was his 1963 Track team that won the State Championship following a 3 place finish the year prior. Later that year, he accepted a position as Dept. head, PE and Health, at McMinnville Jr. High where he worked as Teacher and Track coach for 20 years before his retirement in 1983 after 33 years in Education.
Mr. Abrahamson was a member of the McMinnville and Tillamook Elks Lodges, becoming a life member of 55 years. He also was a member of Michelbook Country Club and the Bayou Gold Club for many years. He was a proud member of the Tillamook County Pioneer Association. He was an avid golfer, gardener and a fisherman. He loved music, dancing, gardening and attending sporting events.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother Neal of Rockaway, and his sister Lucille Marolf of Tillamook, and his wife Phyllis, in 2015. He is survived by sons Rick of West Linn and Jeff of Seattle; his daughters Rory Valdez of Hillsboro and Lori Martin of McMinnville; and grandchildren, Katie, Jamie, Derek, Brady, Mari, Natalie, Sergio and Griffin.
He was a big believer in always giving your "best effort" on and off the playing field! He was friendly and honest, and he believed that everybody be treated the same.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Schmidt and staff at Vineyard Heights for exceptional care.
Services for Robert will be Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 1:00 pm at St. James Church with interment at St. James Cemetery.
