Obituary for Cheryle “Cheri” Vannoy

Cheryle “Cheri” Vannoy, 72, of McMinnville, Oregon died in her home from diabetic complications on Sunday November 18, 2018.

Born February 27, 1946 in Seattle, Washington, Cheri was an avid animal lover and free spirit—preferring to hit the road with her favorite dogs. It was a well known fact that Cheri preferred animals to people, although she could be spontaneously generous—giving the shirt off her back or even the use of her van to complete strangers.

Cheri is survived by her longtime companion, Barbara Jette, her mother, Eleanor Vannoy, her siblings: Lynn Hamilton, Mark Vannoy, and Dayle Lauber, her daughters: Wendy Vannoy and Bonnie Garner and 4 grandchildren: Jordan, Maggie Lyn, Aaron, and Orrin, and numerous loyal friends.

Her love for animals started as a child. Cheri trained guide dogs and did barrel racing while in high school in Davis, California. As an adult, she moved often—all over eastern and southern Oregon—until she settled down in the mid 80’s in the Newberg/McMinnville area. Everywhere she lived though, she was surrounded by animals.

Cheri was happiest in nature, on the water in her canoe, at the beach. She and her sister, Lynn, won a canoe marathon race for women over 55. Her favorite birthday celebration was to have a beach camping trip with family and fellow corgi owners. Every summer she held a corgi picnic complete with BBQ and lots of games for the pups. Through their Champoeg Kennel Cheri and Barb bred and showed Corgis for years, eventually transitioning to Swedish Valhounds. She found good homes for numerous corgi/valhound rescues.

For 30 years Cheri worked for Willamette Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) as a milk tester, averaging more miles per month than most people do in a year traveling all over Oregon, Washington and California with her faithful dogs at her side. Cheri finally-reluctantly-retired early spring of 2018 due to health complications.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating in Cheri’s name to Homeward Bound Pets, a McMinnville no kill pet shelter: or a local pet rescue program of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined—please contact Wendy Vannoy 971-275-6735 for more information.
