Obituary for Elijah John Lawson

Elijah John Lawson, beloved husband, son, brother, friend, and co-worker, passed away on September 21 at age 27. Like many people, he faced inner struggles that unfortunately became too much for him. But neither those struggles nor his death define him. Elijah took pride in taking care of everyone around him, especially caring for his family, checking in on his siblings, making sure everyone - whether family, friend, co-worker or stranger - was OK. His smile would light up a room and he brought boundless energy, laughter and jokes to every encounter. A lifelong athlete, Elijah loved playing basketball and golf, cheering on the Seahawks, and playing video games in his “mancave”. He was the definition of a lifelong learner, always wanting to learn more about social issues and researching other things that interested him, like how to repair a car.

After graduating from high school in Newberg, Elijah worked at the Sherwood Home Depot for 8 years, most recently as a supervisor, and is remembered by his colleagues as a hard worker who cared about his co-workers, making sure they felt valued, heard and appreciated.

Elijah met his future wife, Megan, when they were paired up in a basketball game where it is rumored that Megan blocked his dunk. It took six months for them to actually meet again and go on a first date that Elijah planned meticulously, including making a mixed tape of Megan’s favorite country song. His thoughtful attention to details was evident in his proposal as well, when he made Megan climb the dune in Pacific City where he had a friend waiting in the bushes to photograph the special moment. They were married in August 2017 and lived together in Vancouver, WA.

Elijah is survived by his wife, Megan Lawson, his mother, Carol Lawson, father, John Lawson, and siblings Rebekah, Faith, Noah, Sam, Charity and Esther as well as numerous friends, family and co-workers. He quickly became a beloved member of Megan’s family as well, becoming a brother to Sean and a son to Sue and Bill Hays.

A celebration service for Elijah will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at Rock Point Church in Newberg, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, his family would like to establish a fund to help children participate in sports in his hometown of Newberg. More information will be shared soon. Or please donate to your favorite charity in Elijah’s memory.

Elijah and Megan used to laugh about someday seeing the world in a golf cart--exploring with humor, experiencing new adventures, and taking time to enjoy the small things, just as Elijah did his whole life. He lived with care, love and intention and we are all better for having known him.
