Obituary for Francis H. Dummer

Francis H. Dummer was born to Andrew and Margaret Dummer, January 14, 1930 in New Ulm, Minnesota. He lived on the family farm and attended a one room schoolhouse for 7 years with his numerous cousins. In 1943, the family moved to Mt. Angel, Oregon where he attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Mt. Angel Prep, where he was a member of the prep band & Marion County citizens band. During the summers he worked in the Mt. Angel Cheese plant and then proudly served his country as a Sargent with the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951-1952. After returning from Korea, he married his neighborhood sweetheart, Bernice Jeli on October 1, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Angel, Oregon and they became the proud parents of 5 children.
He completed a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1956 from St. Martin’s College in Olympia, Washington and then a teaching certificate from University of Portland. He completed his master’s degree from Oregon College of Education and received further education at Gonzaga, Berkley, Western Oregon, University of California, Hayward and Oregon State University in Corvallis.
Francis education career spanned 32 years, beginning as a teacher at Detroit School District in Detroit, Oregon and then advanced to principal and then superintendent. He also served as Superintendent of Schools in Dayton, Oregon as well as Chenowith in The Dalles, Central Linn in Halsey and ended his successful career as interim superintendent in Monroe, Oregon.
Francis enjoyed managing his timber property and was a member of the Yamhill County Small Woodlands association and received his Certificate of Master Woodland Manager from Oregon State University. He served on the volunteer fire Department in Dayton, Oregon and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Yamhill County Historical Society. He actively traced his ancestry, publishing two family trees. As a member of St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville, he sang in the choir and served on the St. James School Board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 71 years and achieved 4th Degree Knight.
Francis was quick witted and inquisitive, characteristics that served him well while he played his accordion with a musical group called “The Mavericks.” He took his talents to nursing homes, retirement centers and at family gatherings would pass out the song books and encourage everyone to sing. He was a man of deep faith, who continuously prayed for his family and country and served as a beautiful example and role model for everyone he encountered.
Francis was preceded in death by his sisters Margaret Hagman & Stella Beyer, brothers Father Tony Dummer, O.M.I. & Arthur Dummer and is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bernice Dummer of Dayton, Oregon, Sister, Arlene Rodenhurst (Bill) of Hawaii, brother, Carl Dummer (Kathy) of Salem, Oregon, Sister-in-law, Joan Dummer of Hillsboro, Oregon, daughter, Mary Spiering (Tony) of North Plains, Oregon, daughter Dianne Perkins (Rick) of Centralia Washington, son, Michael Dummer (Jennifer) of Vancouver Washington, son, James Dummer (Marilee) of Hood River, Oregon and son, John Dummer (Cathy) of Portland, Oregon as well as 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
