Obituary for Arnold Leo Pehlke, Sr.

Arnold was born near Merrill, Wisconsin on May 22, 1922 to German immigrants, Anna and Albert Pehlke, one of eleven children growing up on a large dairy farm.
He recalled being up before dawn milking the cows by the age of five, driving a horse drawn sleigh through the snow delivering milk, and being excited about their first Model T.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy, serving as a gunner on troop transport ships in the south Pacific, and later in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. During one close call they were hit by a dead torpedo. While stationed in Seattle for ship repairs, he met his first wife Doris. The year after they got married they had their only son, Arnold Jr.
In 1948, Arnold and his family moved to Pittsburg, California. He worked for many years in the construction industry, attaining the position of superintendent, and built numerous water treatment plants all over the state of California.
He met his second wife, Jean, on one of his later jobs, and they were married in 1977. They lived a nomadic life initially, moving around to Arnold’s various job sites, and upon retirement, continued their travels in their motorhome. They enjoyed traveling all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and have 20 photo albums of their adventures. After ten years living in Tucson, playing golf and socializing with their many friends, Arnold and Jean eventually settled in McMinnville for their final years. Arnold was devoted to Jean and cared for her until her death in 2015.
Arnold would want to be remembered for his active faith, and his generous support of his church ministries. A member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and the Ahmed Shriners, as well as serving as Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, he continuously gave to those less fortunate. He would often be found making the rounds in his community at Rock of Ages, engaging everyone in friendly conversation, making sure no one sat alone.
Arnold is survived by his son, Arnold Pehlke, Jr. and his step-children, Bill Walsh, Michael Treguboff, Christina Weidinger, and Natasha Lawson, as well as many grandchildren and great-granchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted at Rock of Ages, McMinnville, Oregon.
