Obituary for Bernard "Bernie" Joseph McGinnis

Bernard Joseph “Bernie” McGinnis — beloved father, brother, husband, volunteer, and member of the community —died peacefully at age 76 the morning of December 20, 2017 at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center.

Born on May 6, 1941 in Philadelphia, Bernie was raised in a large and pious Irish Catholic family. Having questioned his faith and place in life as a teenager, Bernie joined the Army for a three-year stint that had him stationed in Orleans, France and introduced him to his lifelong career in computer programming. After the Army, he earned a bachelor’s degree at University of San Francisco and a master’s degree at the Perdue University. Living in the Bay Area, he became a devoted single father following the tragic passing of his first wife, Robin, and found meaning by joining the Unitarian Church of San Mateo. Bernie retired in 2001 to attend to his wife Esther Madriz as she battled cancer. Following her death, he moved to McMinnville, where he volunteered for organizations such as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and became a founding member of the Unitarian Church of McMinnville.
Bernie was proceeded in death by his parents Edward and Anne, sister Mary Jo, brother Edward II, sister Anne, and beloved wives Robin Kennedy and Esther Madriz. Bernie is survived by two sons, Jeff and Brendan; a granddaughter, Lucia; and three siblings, Walter, Cathy, and Joseph; as well as many extended family and deep friends, all of whom will miss him terribly.

A celebration of life for Bernie will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 3pm at McMinnville Cooperative Ministries, 544 NE 2nd Street in McMinnville. A second celebration will take place Saturday, February 10th at 11am at the Unitarian Universalist Church of San Mateo, 300 E. Santa Inez Ave in San Mateo, CA. All are welcome to attend either event and help remember the joys of his life.

The family and friends of Bernie would like to thank the dedicated staff of the CV ICU unit at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center for their professional and compassionate care during his last few months.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie’s name may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of McMinnville, PO Box 163, McMinnville OR 97128.
