Obituary for Bertha (Lee) L. Weston

Bertha Leah Weston, 96, formerly of Amity, died in McMinnville on December 29, 2017.
Bertha (Lee) was born August 25, 1921 in Metzger, Oregon to Elmer and Anna Cox who moved to Oregon from Oklahoma when they were very young. Bertha was the middle child of three; a younger sister and older brother predeceased her. She graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School in Portland in 1939. She served as a Navy WAVE at Coronado Naval Air Station, California in WWII where she met and married a Navy aviator, Howard Pedersen, by whom she had a son, Gary. Howard was killed onboard an aircraft carrier in May, 1945, in the Pacific. Thereafter, she married Kenneth T. Weston, a WWII Army Air Corps B-17 pilot, who predeceased her in 2006 after more than 70 years together.
During her second marriage, she lived for over 65 years in the Amity hills on an orchard farm. She loved being outdoors into her 90’s tending to her flowers and garden, and, in her younger years, growing produce that won awards at the Oregon State Fair. She would play board games for hours with friends, and talk about the ebb and flow of their lives. She also liked trout fishing on the North Santiam River, clamming and jetty fishing at the Oregon coast, sewing (especially quilting) and making crafts, some of which also won awards at the Fair. She was the classic stay-at-home housewife and mother of her generation- humorous, friendly, sensible and down-to-earth. A healthy lifestyle and fortunate genes eventually allowed her to outlive all the friends and relatives of her generation – and even some younger—perhaps the saddest result of exceptional longevity.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Sheila, of Depoe Bay, and a granddaughter, Shannon Pedersen (Steve Bunin), of Vancouver, Washington.
At her request, there will be no services. In her memory, contributions may be made to Legacy Hospice Services- McMinnville, PO Box 4484, Portland, OR 97208.
