Obituary for Russell Barney

Russell passed away March 4, 2018, at Hillside Retirement Community in McMinnville. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister. He is survived by, Helen, his wife of 75 years, three daughters, a son, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Born on February 4, 1922 in West Linn, Oregon, Russell was the great-great grandson of Oregon pioneer, Dr. Nathaniel Robbins.

A graduate of Astoria HS, Russell attended Oregon State College as a pharmacy student for two years. His formal education was interrupted by WWII and it wasn’t until 1961 that he completed his undergraduate degree in Business Administration, summa cum laude, at Ohio State University. In 1971 he earned his MBA degree from Southern Illinois University.

Russell followed a military career in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Colonel after 30 years of service. He was a pilot and a veteran of three wars: WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, 13 Air Medals, two Air Force Commendation Medals, and a Meritorious Service Medal.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1973, Russell founded and chaired Departments of Business Administration at Baptist University of America and at The Master’s College.

Before moving to McMinnville, Russell lived in Yachats, Oregon where he served on the City Council, Fire Department Board, County Solid Waste District Board, County Emergency Preparedness Operations, President of the Quiet Water Homeowner’s Association and was a docent at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport.

When Russell moved to McMinnville in 2000, he continued his legacy of service as a volunteer docent for the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, sharing his combat air crew experiences and talking about his love of flying, especially the B-17.

Macy and Son Funeral Home is handling the arrangements with private interment at the pioneer Robert Bird Cemetery in Clackamas County. An open house honoring Russell’s life will be held Tuesday, March 13th from 3pm to 4:30pm in the Hillside Assisted living fireside room, located at 440 NW Hillside Parkway in McMinnville. The family is grateful for the loving care Russell received by the staff at Hillside and by Hospice Care of the Northwest.
