Obituary for Helen Barney

Helen Barney, of McMinnville, OR, passed away March 21, 2018, at Hillside Retirement Community. She was preceded in death by Russell, her husband of 75 years, her parents and three sisters. She is survived by three daughters, a son, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Born Helen Funderburgh, on April 11, 1921, in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, she grew up in the days of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

In 1938 her family moved to Astoria, OR where Helen attended Astoria H.S. and she met Russell. She graduated in 1939 and attended the Oregon College of Education (now called Western Oregon State College) in Monmouth, OR, for two years. In 1942 she married Russell and worked as a telegraph operator during WWII.

Helen was a devoted, full-time military wife and mother. She gardened, sewed, canned, served as both a Cub Scout den mother and a Brownie/Girl Scout troop leader. She found ways to help others no matter where she lived and was active in her church wherever the military took the family.

While living in Illinois, Helen became intrigued by quilting. This talent led to a life-long passion for which she received many honors. She counted her love of fabric and ability to mix color combinations as being gifts from God that she could use to inspire many. She was an active member of the Antelope Valley Quilt Association (in California), and Bayshore Quilters and the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild (both in Oregon). She taught beginning quilt classes as time permitted. Her award-winning quilts have appeared in many quilt shows through the years.

Macy and Son Funeral Home is handling the arrangements with private interment beside Russell in the pioneer Robert Bird Cemetery in Clackamas County. The family is grateful for the loving care Helen received from the staff at Hillside and by Legacy Hospice of McMinnville. Memorial contributions may be sent to The Hillside Foundation, 900 NW Hill Rd., Box 122, McMinnville, OR 97128.
