Obituary for Patricia Estella Barnes

Pat Barnes passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. It was her 81st birthday. Born Patricia Baker in Longview, WA, she moved to Wapato as an infant. In 1945 she moved to Yamhill where she excelled in school. In 1954, Pat graduated Salutatorian from Yamhill High School and later went to OSU. She married her high school sweetheart, Gene Barnes, in 1955. They made their home in rural Yamhill.
Pat began working for the Yamhill Post Office in 1970. In 1972, she was named Yamhill postmaster at a time when women were struggling to be accepted in upper positions in the workforce. Pat loved working with the people at the post office. Her natural kindness and willingness to help others made her well liked in the community. In 1981, the National Association of Postmasters presented Pat with an award for her outstanding service to her community. Pat retired in 1992. Together with her sister, Shirley, she followed her passion working with antiques and collectibles.
Pat loved to spend time with her family. She loved to travel with her sister. She was an avid Portland Trailblazer fan. Pat had high energy, was always up early and would get the most she could out of every day. Pat was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Gene and grandson Dustin Barnes. She is survived by her daughters, Lonnie Adams (Keith), Linda Shutts and son Kenneth Barnes. She leaves her best friend and sister, Shirley Stonebrink of Yamhill. Pat deeply loved her grandchildren Mike (Jenni), Kelly (Sarah), Brad and Kyle Adams; Shelley (Steven) Weise, Greg (Jessie), Matt (Erica), Phadre Shutts, and Jessie (Tye) Shoepe; Damon (Michelle) Barnes, Rod and Wade Atkinson, and Whitney Fortune. She has 14 great grandchildren.
Donations can be made to Yamhill Fire Department. There will be a potluck celebration of life on Saturday, May 12th at Menefee Park at 1:00.
