Obituary for Norman D. Gusinde

Norman D. Gusinde is now at peace. He passed away on May 17, 2018, in McMinnville, just 11 days after he and his family celebrated his 94th birthday. He was born May 5, 1924, in Atwater, CA. The third and youngest child of Paul and Osa Gusinde, he grew up in the Atwater Merced area, helping in the family bakery and delivering bread before school. Norman attended Merced Union High School. He played on the varsity football team and was voted “Most Winning Smile” his senior year.

Norman graduated in 1942 and was drafted into the army in 1943. He served in World War II in Belgium, France, and Germany. He was part of the second wave to arrive in Normandy after the beach was secured. Norman was a cook in the army for the Heavy Automotive Maintenance Division under the command of General Omar Bradley. After the war, Norman returned to Merced where he learned the meat butcher trade. While in Merced, friends introduced him to Clairemae Brandmire. Norman knew on their first date that he wanted to marry Clairemae. After three weeks, Norman proposed and they married in January 1947.

Norman worked in the butcher trade in the Hayward, California, area until August 1968. That year he and Clairemae purchased the Dairy Queen in McMinnville at its original location on 12th and Baker Streets.. For 21 years they owned and operated the Gusinde Dairy Queen and built the store at its present location on 12th and Adams. They worked double shifts for many of those years, taking great pride in their family business. Norman was the more outgoing one in their partnership. He knew most of the customers by name and always enjoyed a good visit.

Clairemae Gusinde passed away in 1999. In 2002, Norman met and married Rita Matheny of Wilsonville, Oregon. Norman and Rita traveled and enjoyed their life together until Rita’s passing in 2006. Norman was also preceded in death by sister Evelyn Stearns of Rockford, WA, and brother Harold Gusinde of Hayward, CA. He is survived by son Steven Gusinde (Toni Leon) of Beaverton, daughter Glenda Wade (Rocky) of McMinnville, son Kurt Gusinde (Robin) of Scottsdale, AZ, stepson Collin Matheny (Joan) of Vancouver, WA, stepdaughter Barb Gray (Phil) of Tigard, and stepdaughter Meg Munger (Jeff) of Milwaukie. Norman was blessed with four grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Trisha Brown (Shane) of Whitehouse, TX, Brian Wade (Karissa) of McMinnville, Paul and Leah Gusinde of Scottsdale, AZ, great granddaughters Claire Brown of Whitehouse and Juliet Pesina of McMinnville.

No service will be held. Donations can be made in Norman’s memory to OHSU Foundation (designate to the Parkinson’s Fund) or St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen in McMinnville, in care of Macy & Son.
