Obituary for Ladawna Joy Risseeuw

Betty B Lichtenthaler (She would want you to know that “Betty” was not short for any other name) was a lifelong Newberg resident, except for that short trip to Tucson Arizona where she was born. Betty died on June 25, 2018. She was 93.

Betty was born into a Newberg family that owned and operated the local Newberg Drugstore. Her mother and aunt were both pharmacist and graduates of Oregon Agriculture College (OSU) class of 1916. Betty graduated from Newberg High Scholl in 1942 and Oregon State University (OSU) in 1946. She was a huge advocate for higher education and always promoted, especially to young women, the importance of getting a college degree.

She was a home economics and math teacher. She taught at Taft High School from 1946 to 1950 then she and her husband (Don Lichtenthaler) moved back to the Newberg area. After having four boys (she always made it clear that at least one of us was supposed to be a girl), she went back to teaching school at Renee Jr High School in Newberg from 1969 to 1984.

Betty thoroughly enjoyed the Oregon Coast and loved spending as much time as she could at the family cabin in South Beach, Neskowin. She was an avid bridge player, PEO member, OSU alumni, swimmer, and was always up for the challenge of participating with friends in other activities.

Betty’s grandfather was one of the founding members of the Newberg Christian Church. She was an active member of the Christian Church and participated in many aspects of leadership for the church.

Betty was known for her quick wit and cutting sense of humor. She was a critical thinker and well-spoken – always respected by others for her thoughts and opinions.

She is survived by her four sons Mark Lichtenthaler, Brad Lichtenthaler, Craig Lichtenthaler and Eric Lichtenthaler along with 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren

At her request, there will be no services. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Winema Christian Camp in Cloverdale, OR.
